Manchester Pride 18th birthday we take a look at this annual event from one of the UK's major cities.
| Manchester Celebrate 18 years of Pride |
|
The Pride march included 87 floats representing
LGBT groups within Manchester and sponsors, media supporters.
The £20 price tag to enter the closed off streets
surounding the Gay Village of Canal Street. Did not put off the majority
of the gay community to attend this years 4 day event. It has been argued from some quarters of the gay community
that the success financially of the event is only seen as a profit
profit making excercise. But the true reality is overheads to organise such a red taped event
cost organisers and it looks like the gay community are prepared to make their contribution. It would be great
to have a free event but who would pay these costs? Security has to be paid for,
waste managed, insurance and staff to be employed. All add up to a costly
event. Profit to cover these expenses allow the event to become reality.
Funding for gay charitities and support agencies may look as if they get
a raw deal. However small the contribution to good causes it is better
than nothing at all.
GTR investigates the proportion of funding received by charities
from this event and how this can be improved for the future.
In 2007 £95,000 was raised in four key LGBT areas.
Free condom & lube scheme, HIV welfare fund, Grants
for LGBT groups and agencies supporting people living with AIDS. Let us
hope the 2008 can beat this figure.

Boy George on the main stage
First impressions:
My first visit to Manchester to discover its 18th Pride
festival. Traveling 200 miles to attend the 4 day event at the heart of
the city of Manchester. After checking into a budget hotel a stone throw
away from Canal Street. For £40 per night including full english breakfast
a single room at the Manchester International Hotel was a bargain. Shared
toilet and shower was the only compromise, They delivered a clean with
character deco.

TV, tea & coffee, towels changed and bed made daily.
The next task was to collect my pass to access the Friday's gay village.
Canal Street was buzing with each bar full and crowds spilling out into
the street. The youngsters were running around as usual and the more mature
set ready to stand and sup up the amber nector. The mainstage Boy George
was DJing and even sang a few bars.
Time for food rather than eat on the move our group decided
on the Italian Restaurant on Canal street Villaggio. Service was excellent
but the food was bland in a party of 5 no one enjoyed their meals. Will
be avoiding this restaurant in future.
The best places to eat in were outside the village at the
Printworks near the Arndale centre. Plenty of choice of National brands.
Avoid Old Orleans they messed up our order served our main courses before
their starters. Food was cold had to complain. Chiquito was the best for
service and quality food.

GTR verdict - for every £1 spent
by the committee in 2007 achieves 35p for good causes. 14% of the
income was given to local gay charities. This may not be an ideal
ratio, but the risks are huge. Maybe there is room for improvement with more tweaking and savings could be achieved
there would be more for good causes.
What must be taken into consideration
while other Pride events fail even to break even, at least there
is something for good causes. It is also unfair to expect such a
event to be just a fund raising venture when at the same time provide
a service.
Businesses in Canal Street and neighbouring
streets may actual rely on the profits of Manchester Pride week.
With Viva charging a £1 entrance fee and some bars £4.50
for Carlsberg were the only signs of excess. Many were offering £3.95 for double vodka and
red bull which was good value. But the beer tents by the main stage
gave best value for money.
Actually when you think of the charge in a positive way, for a four day event £5.00 per evening is cheap and if you want to pay even less there are online facilities where you can buy your tickets in advance at nearly half price.. The other bars on Canal St. were ok
Pride will never please everyone maybe
if those who were put off from attending the main street party could
consider donating to the Lesbian and Gay Foundation direct.
GTR would like to see gayteens enter
the event with concessions or for free or a means test for those
unable to afford the entrance fee. But overall Manchester Pride was good value for money and the majority seemed to enjoy the event.

Improvements: More sponsorship to help cover the costs, Banners outside bars and clubs who support the event. More seating would help. Otherwise the event was well attended and everyone looked as if they were having a great time. Congratulations Manchester Pride for another succesful party.
